KwaZulu-Natal Hiking Trails

zoom

Hiking is a great way to see the countryside, and in KwaZulu-Natal there is a lot of countryside to enjoy, from the steep slopes of the Drakensberg to the Wilderness areas in Maputaland, the coast and the Midlands. The province is crisscrossed with trails, many of them in nature reserves and game parks. Enjoy an hour of beauty, a day, a few days... You'll be sure to get out there again and again.

It is important for visitors to asertain the distance, degree of difficulty and clothing and equipment required for each trail before setting out. Some trails require prior booking, particularly those with overnight stops in caves or hikers huts. Advice is available from Tourism KZN or from any of the clubs or registered guides listed below.

The Drakensberg trails in particular must be treated with caution. The weather can change dramatically from one moment to the next, and at those high altitudes strong winds, mist, snow and extreme cold can arrive unexpectedly. Be sure you complete the rescue register in full at any entrance to a Drakensberg area, even if you are only planning on going for a short stroll.

Please use our interactive database for a list of all registered hiking trails in the province or complete a query form.

The following regional sites have sections dedicated to hiking:
- Drakensberg
- East Griqualand
- Elephant Coast
- South Coast
- Zululand

KZN Wildlife also has a useful section on hiking in KwaZulu-Natal on their website.

There are also a number of clubs and organizations that specialize in hiking and should be contacted for help, advice, registered hiking guides, suggestions as to great hikes in the province - or elsewhere - and copies of the hikes they offer:
